Is it time to set some 'slightly after new year's' resolutions?

Welcome to 2020, did you make a resolution?

 

It is natural to make a resolution at new year’s. Deciding how the coming year is going to be different from the last. It is also natural to have forgotten this by Jan 5th. 

 

New year’s is actually not a great time to set goals.  In fact any other time of year is probably better.  Let’s look at why. 

 

1: You are not at work and out of your routine

2: You may be ‘partying’ a little harder than you usually do

3: You may be holding regrets from the year that has passed. 

 

None of these things put you in a great state of mind to make the life altering decisions that you feel you must, because it is December the 31st.

 

So, when should you make a resolution?  Any other time really. 

 

How about now?  

 

Resolutions or goals, do not have to be useless things that are quickly forgotten. They should guide you for the year ahead.  So, how do you make sure that they will stick?

 

Here are my 3 tips to setting achievable ‘slightly after new years’ resolutions. 

 

 

1: Make them specific

 

 

Don’t say ‘get richer’  I could hand you a fiver and you’d be done. Resolutions are statements about what you want to achieve. 

 

‘I want to set up an investment account and save 10% of my income.‘

 

‘I want to make sure that my partner is looked after if something were to happen to me’

 

The more specific the better, at least then you will know if you have achieved it.

 

 

2: Go Big, but break it down. 

 

‘I want to be out of debt’ is a great resolution but if you owe upwards of half a million dollars it might seem overwhelming.  Take large goals and break them down into bite sized pieces. 

 

‘I want to pay an extra $10,000 of my mortgage this year’ might be better.

 

 

3: Action, Action, Action

 

As soon as you make a resolution, do something towards completing it. 

 

The first step is often the hardest and even leaving it until tomorrow might just kill your whole ‘resolution setting mojo’
